I was just wondering what types of music people use to "set the mood" either during ritual (although I suppose that would depend on the ritual), or while preparing for magical work. Or even in a different context, what kind of music or songs do you associate with "being magical"?
My kick is video game music. For example, I made a batch of mead exclusively for use in ritual work, and every time I worked with it (racking it, testing the SG, bottling, etc.) I found myself whistling the Mysidia theme music from Final Fantasy IV. I've found that this song pops into my head any time I'm projecting the aura of "being a magician." I have the same associations with background songs from many video games that feature magical themes.

Since I do a lot of dancing as rituals, I like trance (psy-progressive), and drumming. For performances, that depends on the show, could be literary anything, also self-made. Odd music and strange vocals, that can't fit in any cathegory, have a special effect on me. And sometimes I like to hear no music at all.

Shamanic drumming. Some classical (eg, Indian, Sufi, Tibetan) and electronic trance. Several TAGC and Chaostar albums. A few context-specific albums such as Illusion of Safety's _Bad Karma_ (for particularly nasty Work) and _Music for Dead Things_ (for necromancy). TurboSonix strobe-encoded CDs. Lots of other stuff; depends on the Work, really.
I dig the idea of using pop tunes, eg, combining Pink Floyd's "Us and Them" or something from _Obscured by Clouds_ w/ a ritual involving The Lovers and/or Zain. I also like Lords of Acid for hedonistic Work. Careful what you have previously anchored to such music. Good enough magician, shouldn't matter (or precisely matters, if you make use of it). Still, I usually distinguish my ritual music from my secular stuff and add a 'k' to the end of it: musick.

I AGREE, I SEEM TO USE TOOL ALOT (THIRD EYE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, I HAVE A NICE PATHWORKING I DO TO LATERALUS, AND I USE THE MERKABA TRACK FROM SALIVAL IN RITUALS BASED ON CROWLEYS CHARIOT TAROT CARD JUST TO NAME A FEW). I FIND IT HARD AND EVEN FEEL A BIT GUILTY WHEN LISTENING TO THESE TRACKS IN MUNDANE TIME... SPEAKING OF ZAIN/LOVERS/SWORD, I FIND "RIGHT IN TWO" OFF 10,000 DAYS A FITTING MUSICAL BACKGROUND...

Understood. Tool has inspired several of my magical ideas. _10,000 Days_: I am almost ashamed to admit I still haven't listened to it.

I hardly use any music, but for rituals. As such anything can jump in. Much of the above can fit in.
But I am fond of shamanistic drumming and the big chinese gong.
