A while ago I created an intimidating 'anti spam' sigil, intending to post it in response to posts that constituted off topic sales pitches (like for porn or drugs) - in a chaos magic forum (not this one). The consensus there was that I shouldn't do it (tho the sigil was deemed 'cool' and likely effective) - because there was a danger of targeting a post some members could appreciate, because real spammers wouldn't be likely to review replies to their posts.

I've been noticing the general discussion category has been targeted by those I would believe to be spammers. Would anyone mind terribly if I posted my anti-spam sigil in reply to some of these? If nothing else I think it looks cool and looks threatening.

I don't see what danger people saw in targeting a post that some member could appreciate. The sigil doesn't remove the post, does it? Smiley ( if it does, wow :p )

I created the sigil in anger, and the mission statment it is derived from is meant to ruin the business said spam is meant to enrich. It's not a 'nice' sigil. Which is why I havn't yet hotlinked it, even in this thread without spam.

I have messaged the site admin to address the spam problem. Will let you know when I have heard back from them.

Fine tune it to the individual spammers, or spammers in general, so that non-spamming porn/viagra/etc. peddlers don't get hit.

But a non-spamming viagra/penis enlargement place will not have posted a spam in the first place, and so won't get the sigil in return.

I thought by, "ruin the business said spam is meant to enrich", he meant the entire market.

okay, there are questions relating to the intent.

"the spam posted in this thread will deliver to the business interest behind that spam, fast financial ruin and failure". that's exactly the statement of intent I worked with. Whoever spammed specifically for money or the potential for money is exactly the business interest.

As I interpret it the target is narrow and specific to the isolated example of spam and the isolated perpetrator. If the viagra merchant hired a marketer, and the marketer posted the spam - the financial ruin would target the marketer's business, not the viagra merchant's. If the viagra merchant personally posted said spam the sigil would target the poster's personal business narrowly and specifically - which should only benefit the viagra reseller industry by thinning competition.

If the sigil worked in a very powerful way, anyone who appreciated the spamming post sufficient to be a potential customer, would be dissapointed the business opportunity has been eliminated.

Here's the sigil, this thread is spam free so the sigil should be inert. ..Well, unless someone posts some spam in response.
