how about:
NO MORE SPECULATION OR RUMINATION. I LIKE SCEPTICISM AND FORETHOUGHT AS MUCH AS ANYBODY, BUT AT SOME POINT YOU HAVE TO DO THE EXPERIMENT AND STOP GUESSING ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN.

Monkey, could you provide something specific on the 8 magics spread?

Just lay out the cards in the form of
                                                      oct.
                                               war         death
                                         wit                         luck
                                               sex          love
                                                      eg0

It seems to work fairly well for me...I also think divination seems to work well after a tension-releasing exercise.

Ok, one last proposal for everyone to look at after considering all these different points of view.

Let us suppose for a moment that:

1. There appear to exist an infinite set of possibilities for any future state.
2. Some possibilities appear far more probable than others.
3. Some possibilities seem much less probable than others.
4. Through divination we might percieve which possible states are more probable, perhaps even highly probable.
5. Multiple parties divining against the same set of "highly probable" events may derrive seperate answers, however the most probable event may be divined more often than slightly less probable ones.

For this experiment I ask that wel focus on “divining short”, that it, examining only future possibilities in the near future.
6.   Participants are encouraged use a tarot deck for divination.
7.   Participants should use 5 cards and perform each divination within a pre-determined 24 hour time period. Participants might also perform a banishing ritual before the divination (please include any rituals  in documentation).
8.  Participants should record the full spread, ritual, their interpretation and the time of the divination.
9. Participants should submit this information to a private email address (divination@theinvisiblecollege.com). All data will be displayed publicly at the same time to avoid risk of contamination.
•   Participants should not discuss the results of their divination with anyone else, until all data has been collected and posted.
•   Participants should participate in all 5 topics.

Participants can layout and interpert the cards how they wish, however for purposes of data collection we do need to know the order that the cards were drawn in as well.

Topics:

1. Baseline (No topic) 7/11/05
2. Iraq 7/12/05
3. Fossil Fuels (oil, gas etc) 7/13/05
4. Natural Disasters 07/14/05
5. Economics 07/15/05

Since this test will hopefully be followed by others, I have tried to keep these topics intentionally broad (we can try a second set with more direct topics, a third with tighter control on the spread etc.)

It may also be beneficial for some people not directly involved in this project to perhaps do readings on similar topics, ignoring card restrictions and dates. Just a Thought.

There's my proposal, who's in?

Ditto: in (although I may have a handicap in that I have never used Tarot for divination of this sort).

Well that makes four of us. I think that perhaps a couple other local chaos freaks might be in as well... that gives us a sample of four to seven people.

Not terrible.... ;-)

Nope, in theory we should try to get as many data sets as possible. Smiley

Fuck. I forgot to do a baseline yesterday. Maybe I should sit out on this experiment and do the next one?

I got distracted, Ratatosk. Sorry. If you run another set, please send me a PM; I would like to participate.

I've used tarot in the past, rune stones in the distant past, and mostly without either when I do these days.  It seems that the tools didn't matter as much as the frame of mind or the frame of reference.  Should you run another experiment, I would very much like to take part.  It might even be interesting to see how results vary using different methods/tools?  Maybe in subsequent experiments?
